Tomislav Nikolic, who was on May 20 elected as Serbia's new president, is no longer the leader of the Serb Progressive Party (SNS). Nikolic made the decision to step down from his party role because he "wishes to be the president of all citizens": Serbia's new president quits as party leader "It is only democratic and civilized, and only fair, that I should be the president of all citizens," he said as he submitted his resignation today. Addressing a session of the party's main board in Belgrade, Nikolic also announced that he would first give the mandate to form a new government to the Progressives - who won most of the seats in parliament in the May 6 elections. "I will offer you the mandate, and you make sure to use it, if not, I will hand it over to worse hands," he told the party gathering. Nikolic expressed his full confidence in his SNS deputy Aleksandar Vucic, who has now taken over as SNS leader until a party congress that will elect new leadership. At the same time, Nikolic announced that his presidential inauguration would take place by June 1. He also told the meeting of top SNS officials that they should not expect him to make decisions, or come up with strategies and personnel solutions in the future, but that they could still count on his advice. The country's new president appealed to his own party, "but also all others and their leaders", to avoid wasting time while negotiating a new government, "and to get serious". According to news agency reports, Nikolic also "shed a tear" during his speech on Thursday. Tomislav Nikolic (Tanjug) Beta Tanjug
