Berisha added that Slovenia has always showed understanding and friendship toward Kosovo and that Kosovo expected assistance in the solving of the final status problem. Berisha told B92 that the assistance he had in mind pertained to what Kosovo expects from other countries, namely, independence.

Berisha believes the Vienna talks so far have failed, adding that from the very start Kosovo approached negotiations with Serbia with skepticism, based on previous experiences. “These negotiations are unsuccessful because one party, Serbia, continues to be destructive and put forward new, unacceptable demands, something that the international community realizes. For this reason, the international community will have to make a decision in the matter and recognize Kosovo as an independent state, since otherwise there may be a revolt in Kosovo”, Berisha said and added that he hoped this would not occur and that the international community will make the right decision and recognize Kosovo’s independence.

Berisha told B92 that he expected today’s meeting in New York to give a just and positive report on Kosovo, that will help the ongoing process.

Commenting on Serbian Prime Minister’s statement that Kosovo will always remain a part of Serbia, Kosovo assembly president said this was not the first such Koštunica’s statement. “And now, just before the Kosovo status is solved, he proposes something absurd and unacceptable, which will yield no positive results”, Berisha said, adding that it was all a part of Serbia’s internal political marketing.

France Cukjati said Slovenia argued in favor of any nation’s self-determination even back in the days of Austria-Hungary. “We wish to see this principle applied to Kosovo as well, by peaceful means and in agreement with neighboring states”, Cukjati said, adding that Slovenia regrets the apparent failure of negotiations so far. “But that failure cannot be an obstacle for Kosovo’s development as an independent, European state”, Cukjati said. He also said that Slovenia does not wish to see any conflict between Serbia and Kosovo, but that such conflicts cannot be regulated at the expense of one party whose rights would be jeopardized in the process .
