"Moderate optimism for unfreezing of SAA"

10 November 2009

Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajčak said that there is reason for “careful optimism” regarding the potential unfreezing of the SAA.

“I think that positive progress has been made, and everyone now is expecting the new report from chief prosecutor Serge Brammertz. I think that there are reasons for careful optimism,” Lajčak told Belgade daily Večernje Novosti regarding the chances that the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) between Serbia and the EU could be implemented.

He said that the right time for Serbia to apply for candidate status to become an EU member-state is “when you know that everyone is ready to accept you”.

Lajčak reminded that Serbia is one of the signatories of the Dayton Accord and that because of this, it is expected to play a constructive role in regional stability, adding that Belgrade is “behaving responsibly” in regards to Bosnia-Herzegovina.

“Belgrade is sending the right messages, and it should continue to do so, openly, transparently, and clearly stating that it supports the territorial integrity of Bosnia-Herzegovina. It should also answer to all questions related to the future of Bosnia, which are in the hands of the Bosnian politicians, including those in the Republic of Srpska (RS). Of course, it would also be good for Belgrade to help RS leaders understand that Bosnia-Herzegovina is their country,” Lajčak said.
