GENEVA All sides in the civil war in Syria have in recent months violated human rights and committed war crimes, a UN team of investigators has concluded. Syrian government forces in recent months massacred civilians and bombed hospitals and committed other war crimes in widespread attacks launched to retake the territory under rebel control, said the UN human rights team. UN report: All sides committing war crimes in Syria Opposition forces, including Islamist fighters, also committed war crimes, including executions, hostage-taking and the shelling of civilian targets, said the report, covering the period from May 15 to July 15. "The perpetrators of these crimes on all sides to the conflict violated international law. They are not afraid of being held responsible. Bringing them to justice is an absolute imperative", the UN commission of inquiry headed by Brazilian Paulo Pinheiro concluded. Independent experts said they had received complaints about the use of chemical weapons. "Based on the evidence we have at this time it was not possible to determine which chemical substances were used, how they were delivered or who the perpetrators were. Investigations are ongoing," the report says. A team of about 20 investigators conducted 258 interviews with refugees, deserters and others, in the region, and also in Geneva, "including via Skype." This is the 11 report that the team has submitted in the past two years. The document urged a political solution to the civil war in Syria and called on other nations to stop the transfer of weapons because there was a significant risk that they would be used for serious violations of international law.
