DAMASCUS Syrian Prime Minister Wael al-Halki was not injured on Monday in a bomb attack on his convoy in central Damascus that killed one of his bodyguards. The attack was reported by TV channel Al-Manar, controlled by Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah, which is close to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. "Dr. Wael al-Halki is well and was not injured," the state television reported. The district Mezze houses many government and military institutions and is also home to senior Syrian officials. As reported by the AFP, the target of the car bomb was the vehicle carrying the prime minister that was travelling as part of a convoy. The blast killed a member of the prime minister's security, seriously injuring another bodyguard and the driver, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which has a network of sources throughout Syria, reported. Damascus has suffered a series of blasts in the past months, which killed or injured hundreds of people. The Syrian government blames the attacks of Muslim extremists who are trying to overthrow President Assad. The conflict in Syria began in March 2011 with mostly peaceful protests against Assad's regime, but later turned into a civil war.
