Syrian prime minister survives car bomb attack

DAMASCUS Syrian Prime Minister Wael al-Halki was not injured on Monday in a bomb attack on his convoy in central Damascus that killed one of his bodyguards. The attack was reported by TV channel Al-Manar, controlled by Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah, which is close to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The blast killed a member of the prime minister's security, seriously injuring another bodyguard and the driver, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which has a network of sources throughout Syria, reported. Damascus has suffered a series of blasts in the past months, which killed or injured hundreds of people. The Syrian government blames the attacks of Muslim extremists who are trying to overthrow President Assad. The conflict in Syria began in March 2011 with mostly peaceful protests against Assad's regime, but later turned into a civil war.
