The Swiss drugmaker Novartis AG reported Tuesday a 49-per-cent, year-on-year jump in first-quarter profits with a net income of 2.95 billion dollars.

The Swiss drugmaker Novartis AG reported Tuesday a 49-per-cent, year-on-year jump in first-quarter profits with a net income of 2.95 billion dollars. The figures came on the back of rising sales, which hit 12.13 billion dollars in the first quarter, up 25 per cent. Most of the increase was generated from Novartis' pharmaceuticals division but also came from vaccines, including the H1N1 swine-flu shot, which brought in 1.1 billion dollars. The company reaffirmed its outlook for the year, expecting net sales to grow at a mid-single-digit percentage rate in local currencies.
