Murdered policeman laid to rest in his hometown

Police officer Miroslav Stamenković, who was shot to death during a jewelry store heist on Friday, was laid to rest in his hometown of Leskovac on Saturday.

LESKOVAC Police officer Miroslav Stamenkovic, who was shot to death during a jewelry store heist on Friday, was laid to rest in his hometown of Leskovac on Saturday. A commemoration was held earlier today in the Leskovac Town Assembly, which was attended by Stamenkovic’s parents, sister, fellow officers, town officials and Serbian Police Director Milorad Veljovic. Murdered policeman laid to rest in his hometown Leskovac Police Administration Chief Vladimir Zugic said that Stamenkovic was a responsible and hardworking policeman and that he had received several awards. “I bow to the young hero. I bow to his family. He still had the boyish innocence in him,” Zugic said. Leskovac Mayor Goran Cvetanovic said that the killed policeman was a hero and that he lost his life while he was honorably and courageously doing his job – protecting citizens and the country. Independent Police Union President Boza Markovic said that Stamenkovic was a role model to both his junior and senior fellow police officers and expressed deep sorrow over his untimely death. “All police officers need to have maximum protection in the field,” he pointed out. 27-year-old Stamenkovic was killed in a shootout during the jewelry store robbery in the southeastern town of Vlasotince on Friday. He was nearby at the time of the heist and tried to stop the perpetrators but they started shooting at him. He returned fire and shot and killed the two of them but not before he was shot himself. Attackers Darinko V. of Berane, Montenegro, and Velibor L. of Bijelo Polje, also in Montenegro were killed while third suspect Adnan S. was arrested. The police said that Stamenkovic was shot in the chest and that he died on the way to the hospital. Veljovic said on Saturday that the police had arrested two more persons suspected of being accomplices in the jewelry store heist and Stamenkovic’s murder. According to the police director, the suspects were arrested in the area of the central Serbian town of Kragujevac and one of them is a cousin of one of the killed robbers. The police arrested Miljan C. And Zoran S. of Kragujevac on suspicion that they knew that the robbery was going to happen but failed to report it to the police. Miljan C is also suspected of helping the perpetrators rent an apartment in Leskovac they used to plan the heist. Leskovac Police Administration Chief Vladimir Žugić said that Stamenković was a responsible and hardworking policeman and that he had received several awards.

“I bow to the young hero. I bow to his family. He still had the boyish innocence in him,” Žugić said.
