"Racism Serbia still not rooted out"

Racism has not been rooted out in Serbia, commissioner for protection of equality Nevena Petrusic announced on Monday. Her comments came during the marking the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. "Racism Serbia still not rooted out" "This is clearly proven by the racism motivated crimes done in the past month: the attack on Alija Omerovic in the center of the capital simply because he is Romani, the hate speech against the Jews that was broadcast in the media and the desecration of Roma singer Saban Bajramovic's statue in Nis," Petrusic stated. These incidents are cause for everyone's deep concern, because racism will not go away on its own, she noted. The authorities also have to react and punish those who spread racism and resort to violence because of it, Petrusic added. "The battle against racism must be fought in the classroom, since that is the place where the young generations adopt the values of a society where everyone is equal in dignity and rights, regardless of race, nationality or ethnic background," the commissioner stressed.
