Members of the largest non-Orthodox Christian church in Serbia, the Roman Catholics, are today marking Christmas Eve. A large majority of Serbians are Orthodox, but the Catholic Church and various Protestant denominations will today celebrate the day that precedes the holiday of the birth of Jesus Christ. Catholic believers mark Christmas Eve Roman Catholic Archbishop of Belgrade Stanislav Hocevar will hold the religious service at the Cathedral of the Ascension of the Holy Virgin Mary in Belgrade. State officials, including Serbia's president and prime minister, have sent their messages congratulating the holiday. Those Orthodox churches that accepted the Gregorian calendar are also marking Christmas Eve today. However, the Russian and the Serbian churches, and the Jerusalem Patriarchate will celebrate this holiday according to the Julian calendar, on January 7.
