Belgrade Mayor Dragan Djilas and French Ambassador to Serbia Jean Francois Terral unveiled on Friday a memorial plaque to the French football fan Brice Taton. He died after being brutally beaten up in Belgrade in September 2009. Memorial plaque for Taton The unveiling of the plaque is a symbolic way of marking the event that happened one year ago, when a group of hooligans beat up a young man who died from sustained injuries, Djilas said. On the occasion of unveiling the memorial plaque, Terral read a letter of Brice Taton's parents, in which they expressed gratitude to the Serbian people for their support in difficult moments. We were truly moved by this gesture of putting up a memorial plaque to our son in Belgrade, and although we are not physically able to be there, we are with you in our hearts and minds, the letter reads. Terral pointed out that France did not mix the hooligans who beat up Taton with the Serbian people who gave their support after Taton's death, and added that everyone should make an effort in preventing violence among people. Brice Taton was beaten up by hooligans in Belgrade on September 17, prior to the football match between the Belgrade club Partizan and the French club Toulouse. He suffered serious head and chest injuries and died on September 29. The indictment charges 15 Partizan fans of being accomplices to murder.
