Athletes' village opens its doors

The Belville district, home to the athletes’ village for the duration of the World Student Games, has opened its doors.

The Belville district, home to the athletes’ village for the duration of the World Student Games, has opened its doors. Natasa Ristic, director of the Student Games Info Center, told B92 that the village consisted of 16 buildings, 14 of which were in a residential zone with 1,858 flats and 9,959 beds. Athletes' village opens its doors The village will be open for 22 days, until July 15, the closing day of the Games. The district is made up of three zones: mixed, housing the Games command center; international, with an international building and restaurant in the Expo center; and residential, where competitors will be housed. A specialist medical team will also be on duty within the village. 6,000 police officers have been tasked to handle security for the 10,000 competitors, and Interior Minister Ivica Dacic does not expect any great security challenges. Besides the sporting facilities needed for such an event, other buildings where athletes will be spending their free time have also been readied. These include a religious center with seven rooms, where athletes will be able to conduct religious practices and services. There will be 180 security cameras in the athletes’ village for security reasons. Dacic claims that the safety of all competitors is guaranteed. The Belgrade Tourist Organization has been preparing for this event since the beginning of the year. Tourist Organization official Dejan Veselinov told B92 that information had been prepared for all visitors to let them know about all the interesting things that can be seen and experienced in Belgrade. Belgrade’s Nikola Tesla Airport stated that it too was ready to welcome the competitors. At the airport, three information desks have been set up, manned by volunteers, to offer assistance to visitors. The Belef 09 summer art festival will also be holding several events in the village during the Games. All competitors will arrive by July 1, when the Games officially begin. The World Student Games, which are second in size only to the Olympics in terms of the number of sporting events, will be the largest sporting event that Serbia has ever hosted.
