According to him, the fence is being built in order to "solve any changes in migration routes."

"We have decided to begin preparatory work on the construction of a fence along the Hungarian-Serbian-Romanian border to a reasonable length if the migratory pressure moves in the direction of Romania," said Szijjarto, according to Reuters.

He also told the pestisracok.hu website that the current migration crisis was "one of the biggest challenges that the European Union has ever faced in its history."

"In light of the unstable regions surrounding Europe, it is possible to agree with an international analysis that predicts a potential wave of 30-25 million refugees in the coming years," said the Hungarian minister.

"We are facing a huge wave of migrants who will continue to represent a challenge for Europe in the coming years," he added.

Commenting on a recent statement by Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann, who drew parallels between the Holocaust and the migration crisis, Szijarrto said the remarks were "quite shocking."

According to the Hungarian official, "the only solution to the migration crisis is the closing of EU's borders" and, "assisting those countries from which the refugees come - or the neighboring countries where there is a possibility to stop them."
