PALE Former Republika Srpska (RS) Assembly Speaker Momcilo Krajisnik has been welcomed by several thousand people in Pale, near Sarajevo. He returned late on Friday after serving two-thirds of his prison sentence, handed down by the Hague Tribunal. Thousands welcome ex-RS official released by Hague According to the RS public broadcaster, RTRS, Krajisnik arrived by plane from London via Bucharest to Belgrade, and a helicopter then flew him to Pale via Banja Luka. He was welcomed by his family, friends and a great number of citizens who came from different parts of the RS, the Serb entity in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Earlier, Krajisnik said in what was his first statement, "You have no idea how beautiful this country is, take care of it, defend it, there is no better country in the world." Asked about his plans, he briefly replied that he wants to revise the verdict finding him guilty of war crimes. Krajisnik was in the ICTY detention unit from April 2000 and was sentenced to 27 years in prison for war crimes committed against non-Serb population in BiH during the war. On March 17, 2009, the Appeals Chamber sentenced him to a term of 20 years. Krajisnik was one of the founders of the Serb Democratic Party in Bosnia, and after the first multiparty elections in the country, on December 19, 1990, he was elected Bosnian assembly speaker. Soon after that, he was appointed the Bosnian Serb assembly speaker. In early 1992, when the parliament of RS was set up, Krajisnik was elected the speaker of this body and remained in that position until the end of the Bosnian war.
