SARAJEVO Serbian Orthodox Patriarch Irinej on Sunday took part in a prayer in the Catholic Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Sarajevo. This came in the scope of the World Meeting for Peace organized by the Community of Sant'Egidio from Italy. Patriarch urges "survival of Sarajevo Christians" "I have the freedom to make an appeal from this holy place to the representatives of the church hierarchy and all the brothers, to help Sarajevo not be left without Christians. This is an ancient Christian city," the Patriarch said. Patriarch Irinej thanked God for enabling a common prayer. "I pray to God to bring us closer. Much time has passed since we Christians divided against ourselves, and it is our well-known proverb that a house divided against itself cannot stand," the Serbian Orthodox Church Patriarch said. He said that Christians have the same Gospel, on which they should build their future. Patriarch Irinej thanked Cardinal Vinko Puljic, who was host of the Mass on the occasion of the World Meeting for Peace, after which he walked the streets of Sarajevo. Cardinal Puljic thanked the Serbian Patriarch for his presence, since, as he put it, he conveys a message of peace, and also expressed his gratitude to the organizer, Community of Sant'Egidio, for choosing Sarajevo as a meeting place for this prayer for peace. "Prayer was our strength for enduring the horror of war. It is important that here starts a message of hope - that being different is not a sin, and that in this difference we should create life and coexistence in tolerance," Puljic pointed out.
