Bulgaria expects to get additional EUR 45mn from the European Commission (EC) for shutting down Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant’s four reactors. According to Bulgarian Energy and Economy Minister Traicho Traikov, Bulgaria has already received two compensations worth EUR 550mn and EUR 300mn from the EC. The Bulgarian Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant has six reactors. The first two reactors were shut down in 2004 at the EC’s request, while the third and the fourth were closed just before Bulgaria joined the EU in 2007. Russian-made 1,000 MW reactors number five and six are the only two operational reactors at the moment. The Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant provides 33 percent of the country’s total electricity demand.
