In the first half of the year, Albania has destroyed more than 8,000 tons of old ammunition which does not meet NATO standards.

In the first half of the year, Albania has destroyed more than 8,000 tons of old ammunition which does not meet NATO standards. The dangerous and expansive job began last year and is being handled by weapons experts in several specialize factories in Albania that contain disarming equipment. Albania destroying old ammunition According to the Albanian Defense Ministry, Albania still has 90,000 tons of ammunition that it needs to deactivate. The job needs to be finished by 2013 and is expected to cost EUR 35mn, most of which will be received from donations. Most of the ammunition is left over from the rule of Albanian Communist leader Enver Hoxha, who was building cemented bunkers with ammunition needed to protect the country from foreign enemies. Albania was accepted into NATO last year and now must bring all of its weapons supplies up to the standards of the Alliance.
