EU Commissioner Olli Rehn wants Martti Ahtisaari to lead a group of experts to help solve the border dispute between Slovenia and Croatia. Rehn met with Ahtisaari after two surprise visits to Ljubljana and Zagreb, and asked Ahtisaari to lead a team of mediators to help settle the border dispute, Rehn’s spokeswoman Christina Nagy confirmed for Slovenian media. Ahitsaari called to mediate Slovenia-Croatia feud She said that the two countries must decide if they were interested in this kind of help before Ahtisaari was given a mandate. “It is important not to put the cart before the horse now,” Nagy said, adding that it was too early to speak about names, because both countries must first agree to the conditions for this type of assistance in solving the problem, which would enable Croatia to progress on its road to EU integration. She said that the border problem had become an EU problem and that the European Commission has not changed its position that finding a solution to the problem was not a prerequisite for Croatia entering the EU. According to Slovenian media, the Croatian press says that Rehn’s mission is unlikely to do much good, because Zagreb and Ljubljana refuse to budge on the issue, not even after the EU enlargement commissioner’s visit.
