Slovenian president Danilo Turk has not agreed to appointments of seven new ambassadors, including ex-Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel. The candidates were nominated by the previous Slovenian government, led by Janez Jansa. Rupel's ambassadorial bid fails Rupel was to serve as the new ambassador to Austria. Turk said that Rupel, “a life-time minister” as Slovenian media describe him, did not comply with the legal requirements of the post, since has not been an MFA employee for at least seven years. As for other rejected candidates, the Slovenian president stated that some of them did not meet legal regulations, others lacked expert experience, while some displayed behavior unfit for ambassadorial posts. Some candidates, Turk was blunt, "displayed more than one of those shortcomings". This decision has caused the Slovenian president to clash with Prime Minister Borut Pahor, particularly since two key embassies – in Washington and in Moscow – remained without top diplomats. One of those rejected by Turk is Matjaz Sinkovc, previously seen as Slovenia’s ambassador to Washington. The former intelligence agency chief was seen unfit for the post because of "essential policy dilemmas". Anton Kokalj, who was to be posted in Moscow, was also among the failed candidates. Meanwhile, the Russian Federation refused to accept his credentials.
