EP: Only Croatia fit for membership
European Parliament Speaker Hans-Gert Pottering says that without ratification of the Lisbon Treaty, only Croatia stands a chance of entering the EU.

European Parliament Speaker Hans-Gert Pottering says that without ratification of the Lisbon Treaty, only Croatia stands a chance of entering the EU. “Without ratification of the Lisbon Treaty only Croatia would be able to enter the EU, and that is a maybe. In that event, we would have to develop political partnerships with our neighbors,” Pottering told a Polish daily, report Croatian media. EP: Only Croatia fit for membership He said that all countries, like Poland, that were calling on other countries besides Croatia to be allowed to join the EU, were first obliged to ratify the Lisbon Treaty. It is looking increasingly unlikely that the agreement on reforming European institutions will take effect before the European Parliament elections in June 2009, Pottering said, adding that a more realistic time frame would be 2010. He said that the treaty was also important because of the world recession and the ongoing financial crisis, which were good arguments for its adoption.
