"We appreciate that the Prime Minister underlines the importance of reforms in the domain of judiciary, rule of law, and economy, considering that too much time has been wasted in those areas."Excuses from the past will no longer hold and Serbia should take urgent measures to prepare the country's economy for the EU in terms of competitiveness and efficiency, he emphasized.
According to Deniau, this also applies to the media as one of the more important sectors.
Commenting on the implementation of the Brussels agreement between Belgrade and Pristina thus far, Deniau said that much has been done in a short period of time, and stressed the importance of continuing in the same direction and implementing everything that was agreed.
Asked "until when Serbia will be able to maintain its neutral position on imposing sanctions on Russia over the Ukrainian crisis," Deniau said that he does not consider Serbia's stance as neutral.
"The prime minister and foreign minister of Serbia have clearly stated that Serbia supports the territorial integrity of Ukraine. That is also the position of the EU," added Deniau.
As far as the sanctions against Russia are concerned, he noted that the matter was "slightly different."
"It is still not a legal obligation, but if you want to join a club, it is normal that you follow its rules. We understand that for certain reasons Serbia is not in a position to apply all the rules in this case, although we expect that from all EU candidate countries," the French ambassador stressed.
