Equality Protection Commissioner Nevena Petrusic has stated that a controversial regulation for the setting up of the Bosniak National Council was removed. She pointed out that it was necessary that other regulatory bodies also investigate whether all rules had been followed. Controversial national councils rule abolished “I did my part of the job. The procedure is complex and unfortunately, there is work for everybody,” Petrusic told Beta news agency. After elections for the Bosniak National Council the Human and Minorities Rights Ministry introduced a rule according to which verification of two thirds of mandates was necessary to constitute the national council. But soon after, this was removed from the rules of procedure for the setting up of national councils. Petrusic stated that in the last three months she received about 30 complaints from all parts of Serbia and that the number is rising each day with the increased number of citizens who realize that they can report discrimination to the commissioner. “The citizens most often complain of discrimination in the field of work and employment and as grounds for it they are stating ethnicity, affiliation or non-affiliation to political parties as a problem while they search for jobs, and in keeping their jobs,” she stressed. Petrusic adds that surveys show that when it comes to discrimination, Roma, the disabled, the poor and gay population are most at risk, while women are discriminated on several grounds, both gender-related, and also in case they are disabled and live in rural areas.
