President Boris Tadic will spend Thursday visiting construction sites within three capital infrastructure projects in, and close to Belgrade. Those are a collector in Veliko Selo, a tunnel in Strazevica, and a bridge over the Sava River. President Tadic tours construction sites Tadic started the tour yesterday afternoon, when Beta news agency reports he said it was very important to complete the construction of all initiated capital infrastructure projects in the country within eight years. Visiting a site in Veliko Selo near Belgrade where a water drainage system is being built, Tadic told reporters that segments of road and rail Corridor 10 are under construction in Serbia at the moment, as well as two bridges in Belgrade, a bridge near Beska on the Danube north of Belgrade, and a number of other facilities. The president voiced the hope that the northern route of Corridor 10 to Hungary will be completed by the end of 2010, and the route to Bulgaria will be finished by late 2011. Tadic, however, stressed that it was very important not to cross "the red line of public debt" in financing these facilities, so as to prevent economic collapse. Tadic visited on Thursday the construction works at the Beska Bridge on the Danube River 42 kilometers northwest from Belgrade, and stated that the Serbian citizens should be proud that at the moment, the greatest number of bridges in Europe is being built in Serbia. After a conversation with the construction workers, Tadic said that following the completion of all current projects, Serbia will have 13 bridges over Danube, which is more than the majority of the Danube region countries have built. "It always turns out to be more expensive for a country not to have the bridges, roads and dams it needs," Tadic said, adding that the lack of modern infrastructure hinders general economic development. Tadic commended the consortium Alpine-Porr for speeding up works on the bridge, which has until now been one of the slowest sections of pan-European Corridor 10. The Austrian company launched construction of still another bridge in next the old one, which will improve and speed up the traffic on the Belgrade-Novi Sad highway. Tadic, who visited construction sites of three key infrastructure projects in Belgrade on Wednesday, underlined that Serbia is on the way to complete projects that were designed and started many decades ago, adding that the bad tradition of abandoning capital engineering works has to be stopped. Tadic will visit Thursday the works on the northern section of Corridor 10 between Novi Sad and Subotica, as well as a construction site near the Danube River in Novi Sad. Tadic warned all construction workers in Serbia that in the months to come, he will pay unannounced visits to construction sites so as to check the dynamics of works at the capital infrastructure projects.
