G17 plus ministers have threatened to leave the ruling coalition if the Law for Public Information is not adopted, daily Vecernje Novosti writes. “We will not topple the government, but August 31 is the day of truth for this ruling coalition. If the law does not pass, we will leave the government,” a source from the party’s leadership told the Belgrade daily. G17 threatens to exit govt. According to Vecernje Novosti, leaders of the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS), who are against changes being made to the law, will not enter an open war with G17 plus, but they will not move on their position on the bill, which has caused much controversy among experts because of the extremely high fines prescribed for media violating the new regulations. The daily reminds that the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is ready to help the ruling coalition adopt the law, but only if a new package of media laws is prepared for the fall parliamentary sessions. However, G17 plus has denied reports that they are threatening to leave the government, stating that only “SPS leader Ivica Dacic is endangering the government with his hypocritical behavior.” “This government can only be toppled by SPS leader Ivica Dacic with his incorrect and hypocritical behavior. He is sabotaging the adoption of the only government draft law and putting off the passing of other laws, which are just as important. Dacic has brought about a potential crisis in the ruling coalition by doing so,” G17 said in a statement. The party stated that “these are not the 1990s, and you cannot say one thing and do another, because such demagogy does not work any longer.” “We will see on August 31 who is who and whether Serbia will receive a law which will bring order, not to the media, but to Serbian politics, first and foremost. The adoption of these changes and additions to the Public Information Law should represent the final and most important point in the process for the full democratization of the society,” the party stated. SPS Vice President Zarko Obradovic claims that the changes and amendments to the Public Information Law cannot endanger the government and the strategic and long-term partnership of SPS and the Democratic Party (DS). He told Novi Sad daily Dnevnik that the government cannot fall due to one issue or law, the Public Information Law included, which was demonstrated by experiences of earlier governments.
