Liberal Democratic Party leader Cedomir Jovanovic says that Belgrade’s call for a boycott of the Kosovo elections is pushing the Kosovo Serbs into isolation. Reacting to yesterday’s government decision to advise the Serbs against participating in the local elections in Kosovo, Jovanovic said that the boycott would only push Serbs deeper into the ghetto and wreck their chances of gaining the status of an organized political community able to use the institutions to promote their rights. LDP slams call to boycott “The call for a boycott only strengthens the extremists that use the fate of the Kosovo Serbs as an excuse to continue policies of isolationism, which is destroying Serbia and pushing its people into ruin, similar to what happened in the 1990s,” Jovanovic said in a written statement. The LDP leader added that the Kosovo Serbs must think about themselves and their lives, and vote at the November elections. He added that preventing the Kosovo Serbs from voting had nothing to do with protecting national interests. “People who are playing the ‘Serb’ card in Belgrade, while Serbian government ministers are being stoned in Kosovo, cannot be a benchmark for state policy, and still less leaders of the Kosovo Serbs. Enough lives, property and security have been sacrificed for the sake of proving phony patriotism,” Jovanovic said. The LDP leader said that the Serbian government was denying the Kosovo Serbs “the last chance to have a say in their own lives, which, for two decades, have been sacrificed for so-called high policies.” He said that it was inhumane to ask the Kosovo Serbs to boycott the elections and forfeit their chances of gaining minimal rights. Jovanovic added that this week’s return of Serbs to the Kosovo Police Service had shown that life must triumph ultimately, and that only participation in institutions where the fate of the Serbs was decided could offer them effectively protection.
