EU appoints envoy for Kosovo talks

“Ischinger will do his best to make sure the upcoming talks are genuine and comprehensive. The European Union holds the issue of Kosovo as its top priority,” the statement from Brussels says.

After attempts to adopt a UN resolution on Kosovo's status reached an impasse at the Security Council, the debate on province’s future has been moved to the Contact Group composed of the U.S., Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Russia.

The group decided Wednesday that the international troika of the EU, U.S. and Russia should mediate in new round of negotiations.

Each member of the troika is expected to appoint its envoy to the talks. Diplomat Frank Wisner, current U.S. envoy to Kosovo,  will likely represent the United States.

Before Brussels officially confirmed Ischinger’s appointment, Munich daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung speculated Saturday that the German diplomat was the main candidate for the post.
