According to Rexhepi, proclamation of independence would be followed by recognition by  the United States and some EU member countries.

“We are fully aware that the integration of province’s north into the system of Kosovo would pose a problem, so we offer the people living north of the Ibar River to attain essential autonomy within Kosovo,” he said.

Rexhepi , who is also a vice president of Hashim Thaci’s Democratic Party of Kosovo (DPK), said that the DPK, being the largest oppositiona party in Kosovo, was ready to “form a coalition with certain Serb parties registered in the province.”

Another DPK vice-president, Fatmir Limaj, called on residents of Kosovo to be patient at least until U.S. and Russain presidents meet on July 2.

“Even though we are tired from delays in the status settlement process, Kosovo residents have to be patient and wait for the Bush-Putin meeting in order to see what will happen next,” Limaj said Saturday in Lipljane.

“We expect that Russia will consent to independence and abstain from using its veto powers. Otherwise, a unilateral proclamation of independence will ensue, even though it might not be the best option, bearing in mind possible  problems we may face afterwards,” Limaj said.
