The trial of Stanko Subotic, aka Cane, and a group of others, accused of cigarette smuggling, continues before the Special Organized Crime Court in Belgrade. The trial continues with the testimony of witnesses. Subotic’s group is accused of smuggling cigarettes worth EUR 18mn and USD 8mn in between 1995 and 1996. Cigarette smugglers on trial There are 12 other persons accused along with Subotic, including former federal customs administration director Mihalj Kertes, paramilitary Scorpions unit founder Milan Milanovic, former Novi Sad police chief Miodrag Zavisic, former Novi Sad state security chief Milovan Popivoda, former customs workers Nebojsa Nikolic and Drago Dodevski, singer Ivana Olujic, Luka Nenadic and Stevan Banovic. The case against Subotic was separated at the beginning of the trail, since he is a fugitive and there is an Interpol warrant out for his arrest. Subotic is also wanted in Italy on cigarette smuggling charges. Serbian businessman Andrija Draskovic, along with five Montenegrin and seven Italian citizens are also under investigation by the Italian prosecution. They are suspected of being involved in cigarette smuggling activities in between 1994 and 2000. Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic was also found among the suspects, but his case has been archived because of the immunity he enjoys as prime minister. Djukanovic has stated on several occasions that he is not claiming immunity, and answer the questions of the Italian court in its investigation.
