The police officer that shot and killed a man in New Belgrade two days ago was been taken into custody, Interior Minister Ivica Dacic confirmed for B92. Dacic said that he is very sorry about the tragic events leading to the death of Djordje Zaric, 24, and has already ordered changes within the riot police brigade, among them the chief of the unit, B92 has learned. Officer in custody after shooting incident The interior minister said that ministry officials must work strictly within their authority and to be well aware of their actions and the consequences they have on the lives of the citizens. “I want to take this opportunity to appeal to all citizens to respect the legal regulations and to cooperate with police in maintaining public order and peace in the fight against crime, but at the same time, I demand from police to uphold their responsibilities in completing their tasks,” Dacic said. “I also want to take the opportunity to express my regret and offer my deepest condolences to the family of Djordje Zaric and to inform the public I have ordered necessary changes in the cadres of the police unit according to objective responsibility,” he said. The details of the incident remain unknown. What was revealed earlier is that the victim was in the passenger seat of a car that ignored repeated warnings by the police officers to stop, speeding through several red lights in the early hours of Thursday. A chase ensued, after which the police blocked the car's path and asked that the driver and the passenger exit the vehicle. However, Zaric, said to have been under the influence of alcohol, reportedly refused. As he tried to pull the victim out of the car, the officer's gun went off, shooting the man in the head. A police statement issued after the incident said that the shooting was an accident.
