“No evidence against Kovačević”

The justice minister says Serbia does not have enough information to launch legal proceedings against student Miladin Kovacevic. “If America gives Serbia a photocopy of the evidence of the crime that Kovacevic allegedly committed there, we would be able to try him here,” Snezana Malovic told daily Vecernje Novosti. “No evidence against Kovacevic” She said that the Justice Ministry had not received any official application from the U.S. regarding the case. Kovacevic is accused of assaulting a fellow student in Binghamton, New York state. He was released on bail and fled back to Serbia on illegally acquired travel documents, and now refuses stand trial in the U.S. Malovic said that she had received notification that she would be meeting with Hague Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz on September 11, but added that the exact schedule of his meetings in Belgrade was still unknown. She said that six new laws relating to the judicial system would be coming in for parliamentary procedure in October, adding that she had discussed reorganization of the network of judicial organs with justice officials in Kosovo as well.
