Veselin Sljivancanin, a former JNA officer convicted of Vukovar crimes, has been temporarily released. He arrived in Belgrade late Sunday on a regular Jat Airways flight from Amsterdam. Vukovar Three officer arrives in Belgrade His lawyer confirmed this for reporters and thanked the Serbian government for the guarantees it gave to the Hague Tribunal, that enabled his client's release. Sljivancanin will hand over his passport to police in Belgrade and will not be allowed to leave the country. He will remain free until the end of the appeal process before the UN war crimes court. The former Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) major was found guilty and convicted to five years in jail in a Hague trial. The prosecution charged him with doing nothing to prevent torture of Croatian POWs after the fall of Vukovar in late 1991. The prisoners were later executed by members of the local territorial defense in Ovcara farm, near the eastern Slavonia town. Mile Mrksic, another former JNA officer, was also found guilty and sentenced to 20 years, while Miroslav Radic, the third defendant in the trial dubbed the Vukovar Three, was acquitted.
