Editor-in-Chief of Economist magazine Milan Culibrk said that Serbia must focus on saving money regardless of the economic crisis. With public discussion starting up recently of the government’s decision to pay a monthly rent of EUR 7,000 for Serbia’s ambassador to UNESCO in Paris, the Interior Ministry stated that revisions of its spending are ongoing. “Serbia must save regardless of crisis” Ministry Political Director Borko Stefanovic said that the ministry has been successful in saving money already. “With the adoption of decrees for regulating spending adopted at the last government meeting, the revision has received its political framework,” Stefanovic said. Culibrk told B92 that the situation is reminiscent of when the country adopted the budget last year, and then confirmed later that it was able to save more. “It was now confirmed that large amounts of money are being spent without reason for renting apartments, but there are talks here about not giving ministers coffee at government meetings for free, while we are paying EUR 7,000 for renting one apartment in Paris. There are obviously double standards and until the public pressures the government, it will not cut the spending that exists and which can always be decreased to a normal level,” Culibrk said. He said that the government must save regardless of the crisis. “Diplomatic headquarters of Serbia abroad must watch how they are spending. There are other headquarters in catastrophic states, while nothing is being invested there, and in other places they are spending money without need. Even if there was no crisis, the spending of every dinar should be taken seriously, not only in diplomatic and consular headquarters, but inside the country as well, starting from the first to the last budget user,” Culibrk said.
