70% of Serbian families are feeling the effects of the economic crisis, while almost 1/2 believe the worst is still to come, according to a Medium Gallup poll. Less than 15 percent of citizens say that life is good currently; one in two say that life is either bad or unbearable, while one in three rate it as tolerable. Poll: Citizens feeling pinch of economic crisis These were the results of a series of a polls focusing on the impact of the economic crisis and assessments of the government’s response, conducted in March, May and June on a representative sample of 1,018 Serbian citizens. Around nine percent of citizens have not felt the impact of the crisis whatsoever. Of these, the majority are people under the age of 34, of higher or professional education, in Belgrade or south-east Serbia, particularly those with an average monthly income of over RSD 48,000 (around EUR 500) per household member. 55 percent of respondents say that their material situation has either worsened or deteriorated compared to the same period last year, 40 percent say it is the same, while seven percent say that their situation has actually improved. The poll shows that 47 percent of Serbian citizens believe that their financial situation will remain the same, 31 percent that it will get worse, and 13 that it will improve. Over 70 percent of citizens say that the government’s response to the crisis has been either completely or largely unsuccessful, while 16 percent believe that the state is coping well.
