The price of wheat from this year's harvest in Serbia will be set exclusively by the market and demand for quality grains, says the agriculture minister. Sasa Dragin told B92 TV that bad weather conditions and demand for high quality wheat will see that price grow. "Market, quality to set wheat prices" This weekend is expected to see farmers harvest 30 percent of the total amount of wheat in the country, while the damage done by the weather should be assessed soon, he explained. Dragin also said he expects that two thirds of the total amount of subsidies would be paid to farmers by the end of July. The subsidies, set aside for individual households and farming associations, amount to RSD 12,000 per hectare. The minister stated that farmers will be offered an opportunity to store their grain in several locations should they wish to wait for a better price. "They'll be able to get bank loans with that wheat as collateral in order to start the next production season, and wait until the price is higher and sell their products at the higher price." Some 200,000 tons of wheat have been stored in this way so far – the figure which amounts to ten percent of this year's harvest. Wheat is harvested in Serbia (Beta)
