Infrastructure Minister Milutin Mrkonjic says that the world economic crisis won’t affect construction projects in Serbia. “Serbia has construction projects that are being funded by all the world banks. It has EUR 1.6bn for the Corridor 10 project,“ Mrkonjic told reporters after the opening of the Belgrade Construction Fair. Mrkonjic: Crisis won't stop construction Loans could be used to negotiate the crisis in the construction industry, said the minister, adding 150,000 jobs could be created on the Corridor 10 project in the next 18 months, using tax payers’ money and international loan assistance. He said that a tender for the Horgos-Novi Sad section of the highway would be called on April 27, with the winning contractors due to be chosen on May 4. That meant that construction could start as early as May 9, with the opening of the highway scheduled for November 29. Mrkonjic said that a project for building new flats was also under way, whereby, in Belgrade, 20,000 new flats would be built, worth around EUR 500mn overall. Asked what the Infrastructure Ministry could do towards the planned government savings, he said that he was a bad example for that as he had not thus far had any advisers, nor would he, and nor had he traveled abroad. The Construction Fair features 1,100 exhibitors this year, 350 of whom are from abroad. After the opening, Mrkonjic and the Chinese ambassador to Serbia opened the Chinese national exhibition, featuring 30 exhibitors, who are attending the Belgrade fair for the first time. The fair will run until April 26. Milutin Mrkonjic (FoNet, archive)
