Economy Minister Mladjan Dinkic will this evening be proclaimed World Finance Minister 2006. The Economy and Regional Development Ministry has announced that Dinkic will be the first Serbian minister to win the hallowed honor, awarded by Euromoney magazine – the leader in the fields of finance and banking - during the annual meetings of the IMF and World Bank. Dinkic - World Finance Minister 2006 The magazine said it had decided to give the award to Dinkic for a number of reasons: his success in stabilizing the dinar; the reconstruction of the banking system; his success in turning the fiscal budget deficit into a sufficit in 2005; and in 2006, the reduction of the national debt, turning Serbia into one of Europe’s lowest debtors. It is also stated that he managed to overhaul the tax system, introduced VAT and reduced income tax to the lowest level in Europe, thus increasing public revenue and considerably reducing the grey economy. He was also responsible for Serbia’s prompt repayment of all its IMF, and a part of its World Bank, loans, meaning that the country no longer depends on financial assistance. The statement goes on to say that together with the successful privatization of Mobi 63 and the sale of a license for a third mobile phone operator, he contributed to attracting USD 4.4bn worth of direct foreign investment – the highest in the region.
