That's it: The future president of Chile's last name finishes with "ić"
Based on 99.5 percent of the counted votes, Borić won 55.87 percent of the vote, ahead of the far-right candidate José Antonio Kast, who won 44.13 percent, the Chilean Election Commission announced, so Borić will formally take office on March 11, 2022.After the declared victory, he said that he would fight against environmentally harmful projects, among which are the mining of copper and gold, Reuters reported. "By destroying the world, we are destroying ourselves. We no longer want projects that are destroying our country, our community," he said.
Opponent Kast admitted defeat on Sunday night and congratulated the future president of Croatian origin.
Chileans have been choosing from a variety of options in recent decades, with candidates offering completely different visions on all issues, from pensions and privatization to human rights. They chose between Borić, a 35-year-old former leader of the Communist Party-linked student protests, and the ultra-conservative Kast, which is linked to Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and is known for defending former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet.
In case he wins, Borić, whose father is of Croatian origin, will be the youngest president in the history of Chile and, as the "New York Times" writes, the most liberal after Salvador Allende.
The first round of the presidential elections was held on November 21.
