Defiant message from Tehran: "Hormuz is ours and will be controlled"

Iran, according to Arab media reports and unnamed sources, is insisting on control over the Strait of Hormuz and the possible introduction of tolls for ships passing through, while warning that it is also prepared to use force if necessary.

Under the terms of a temporary agreement between Iran and the United States aimed at ending a three-month conflict, Iran agreed to allow ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz free of charge for the next 60 days.

However, according to official sources in Tehran, the wording of the agreement allows Iran to retain control over which ships are permitted to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, as well as to determine the routes vessels must take through the Persian Gulf.

Unnamed sources claim that Iran is determined to secure permanent and formal recognition of this control after the temporary period expires, adding that the Iranian negotiating team will not move on to other issues in ongoing peace talks with the United States until this matter is resolved.

If the temporary agreement expires without renewal, Iran would begin charging commercial vessels for passage through the Strait of Hormuz in mid-August, the sources said.

"Iran is prepared to enforce its demands by force if other countries do not accept its terms," one unnamed source claimed, adding that Tehran will not back down even if it leads to a renewed and intensified conflict with the United States.
