According to the draft, American military forces would withdraw from the vicinity of Iran and lift the naval blockade of Iranian ports. In return, Iran has reportedly committed to restoring the number of commercial transit ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz to pre-war levels within one month.
As noted, military vessels are not included in the draft agreement.
The reported memorandum of understanding with the United States also allegedly includes:
- Management and shipping routes through the strait would be regulated by Iran in cooperation with Oman.
- If a final agreement is reached within 60 days, the deal would be approved in the form of a binding resolution by the United Nations Security Council.
- The framework has not yet been finalized, and Iran will not take any steps without “tangible verification.”
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime routes for transporting oil and gas, with around 20 percent of global oil and liquefied natural gas passing through it.
At the start of the conflict with the United States and Israel, Iran blocked the Strait of Hormuz, while the U.S. later launched its own naval blockade of the strait in response to Tehran’s actions.
