America strikes; A series of powerful attacks begins
The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that it has launched a series of airstrikes against targets in Iran this evening.
In a post on the social media platform X, CENTCOM said the aim of the strikes was to make Iran pay a "high price" for attacks on commercial vessels carrying civilians in an international waterway.
The statement added that the U.S. strikes were a response to what it described as Iranian attacks on three commercial vessels that were transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
"U.S. Central Command has begun a series of powerful strikes against Iran to impose significant costs for targeting and attacking commercial vessels with crews carrying innocent civilians in an international waterway. The U.S. strikes are a response to Iranian attacks on three commercial vessels that were passing through the Strait of Hormuz," CENTCOM said in a post on X.
The U.S. military assessed that "Iranian aggression" was unprovoked, dangerous, and represented a clear violation of the ceasefire agreement.
"Iran's demonstrated aggression was unjustified, dangerous, and constituted a clear violation of the ceasefire."
Iran's Mehr news agency reported that explosions were heard in the city of Sirik, in the south of the country.
The Fars news agency said that explosions were recorded in Sirik and on Qeshm Island, adding that the origin and cause of the blasts were not yet known.
Iran's state television reported that seven explosions were heard near the village of Tahruji, which is administratively part of the Sirik area.
