The main target of the Ukrainian strikes was the strategically important refinery in Ryazan, which burst into flames after a series of explosions.

Strikes were also reported near Moscow, in Crimea, and at the military airfield in Yeysk.

The latest attack comes just one day after a deadly Russian missile and drone strike on Kyiv in which at least 24 people were killed and at least 47 injured.

The Ukrainian military reportedly carried out a large-scale drone attack on Russian military and energy infrastructure across several Russian regions during the night of May 15, according to Russian Telegram channels cited by the Kyiv Independent.

Photos and videos posted on social media allegedly show a massive fire in the area of the Ryazan oil refinery, one of the largest in Russia.

Large columns of smoke were seen rising above the city throughout the morning following the attack.

Residents of Ryazan claim they heard and saw several drones flying over the city before powerful explosions occurred near the refinery.

Refinery producing millions of tons of oil hit

The Ryazan refinery, which processes more than 17 million tons of oil annually, has already been targeted several times in Ukrainian attacks because of its role in supplying fuel to Russia’s war machine.

Ryazan Region Governor Pavel Malkov said that drone debris struck an unnamed company in the region, as well as several residential buildings. He also stated that three people were killed and 12 injured in the attack.

The full extent of the damage is still unclear.

Military airfield also hit

Elsewhere in Russia, Telegram channels, citing local residents, reported that smoke was rising overnight from the area around the military airfield in Yeysk, in Krasnodar Krai, after air defense systems were activated.

The Kyiv Independent said it could not independently verify the reports of the attacks or the claims made by Russian officials, while the Ukrainian military has not yet commented on the alleged strikes.

Ryazan is located about 450 kilometers from the Ukrainian-Russian border in Sumy Oblast and around 180 kilometers southeast of Moscow.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced that five Ukrainian drones were shot down while approaching the Russian capital shortly before midnight on May 14. Domodedovo and Sheremetyevo airports temporarily suspended operations because of the attack.

Explosions were also heard in Yevpatoria and Saky in occupied Crimea, according to the Telegram channel Krymsky Veter.

New tactics of the Ukrainian army

After the attack on Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on May 14 that he had ordered the military to prepare “possible formats of a Ukrainian response.”

Ukrainian drones have increasingly targeted Russian oil and gas infrastructure in recent weeks as part of a broader campaign aimed at reducing Moscow’s energy revenues, one of the key sources financing Russia’s war effort.

According to data compiled by Bloomberg, Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil infrastructure in April reached their highest level in the past four months, with at least 21 recorded strikes on refineries, pipelines, and offshore oil facilities.
