Retaliation has begun — and it is brutal; Apocalyptic scenes in Russia PHOTO/VIDEO
Ukraine carried out retaliatory strikes after brutal attacks on Kyiv launched by Russian forces the previous day and night. One of Russia’s most heavily protected oil facilities is reportedly on fire. Residents say that “black rain” is falling over the city.
The main target of the Ukrainian strikes was the strategically important refinery in Ryazan, which burst into flames after a series of explosions.
Strikes were also reported near Moscow, in Crimea, and at the military airfield in Yeysk.
The latest attack comes just one day after a deadly Russian missile and drone strike on Kyiv in which at least 24 people were killed and at least 47 injured.
Large columns of smoke were seen rising above the city throughout the morning following the attack.
Residents of Ryazan claim they heard and saw several drones flying over the city before powerful explosions occurred near the refinery.
Refinery producing millions of tons of oil hit
The Ryazan refinery, which processes more than 17 million tons of oil annually, has already been targeted several times in Ukrainian attacks because of its role in supplying fuel to Russia’s war machine.
Ryazan is located about 450 kilometers from the Ukrainian-Russian border in Sumy Oblast and around 180 kilometers southeast of Moscow.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced that five Ukrainian drones were shot down while approaching the Russian capital shortly before midnight on May 14. Domodedovo and Sheremetyevo airports temporarily suspended operations because of the attack.
Explosions were also heard in Yevpatoria and Saky in occupied Crimea, according to the Telegram channel Krymsky Veter.
New tactics of the Ukrainian army
After the attack on Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on May 14 that he had ordered the military to prepare “possible formats of a Ukrainian response.”
Ukrainian drones have increasingly targeted Russian oil and gas infrastructure in recent weeks as part of a broader campaign aimed at reducing Moscow’s energy revenues, one of the key sources financing Russia’s war effort.
According to data compiled by Bloomberg, Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil infrastructure in April reached their highest level in the past four months, with at least 21 recorded strikes on refineries, pipelines, and offshore oil facilities.
