The United States had waited 10 days for Iran’s response, which arrived on Sunday. The White House had hoped Iran’s position would show further progress toward a deal, but Donald Trump’s initial reaction signaled the opposite.

“I don’t like their letter. It’s inappropriate. I don’t like their response,” Trump said, refusing to go into further detail about what was in the reply.

In a post on Truth Social shortly after the call, Trump described Iran’s response as “TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!”

Iranian state media reported that Tehran’s response focused primarily on ending the war and securing guarantees that it would not resume.

Tasnim News Agency, which is affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), reported that the Iranian text “emphasizes the necessity of lifting U.S. sanctions, ending the war on all fronts,” and ensuring Iranian control over the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the report, Iran demanded an immediate end to the U.S. naval blockade after the agreement is signed.

The response maintains the proposed framework of an initial memorandum of understanding followed by 30 days of negotiations, but insists that U.S. sanctions related to Iranian oil sales be lifted during that 30-day period, Tasnim reported.

Iran also demanded the release of frozen assets following the initial signing of the memorandum.

Iran unwilling to make nuclear concessions

Those conditions, if confirmed, are far from what American negotiators had hoped for. Iranian state media also did not specify any nuclear concessions Iran would be willing to make.

Trump told Axios that he spoke on Sunday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and discussed, among other things, Iran’s response.

“It was a very nice call. We have a good relationship,” he said about Netanyahu, but added that negotiations with Iran are “my situation, not everybody else’s.”

“We have just seen the reaction of the so-called president of the United States to Iran’s response. It carries no importance whatsoever. No one in Iran drafts proposals to please Trump. The negotiating team should prepare proposals solely for the rights of the Iranian people, and when Trump is dissatisfied with them, that naturally makes them better,” an Iranian source told Tasnim.
