Horrifying; Document released: They planned the Sydney massacre in detail, underwent tactical training
A father and son accused of a terrorist attack on Bondi Beach in Sydney, in which 15 people were killed on December 14, had been planning the attack for months and had previously practiced handling firearms, according to a court document released today.
According to court records, Saeed Akram (50) and his son Naveed Akram (24) filmed themselves during training with rifles at an unknown rural location in the Australian state of New South Wales. The footage shows them moving and firing in a manner indicative of tactical training, CNN reports.
The document states that, shortly before the shooting at Bondi Beach, the suspects threw four improvised explosive devices into the gathered crowd, but none of them detonated.
Police claim that three pipe bombs and one explosive device concealed in a tennis ball were functional, and that another bomb was found in the vehicle they used.
Saeed Akram was killed during the police intervention, while Naveed Akram was wounded and survived. Charges have been filed against him for terrorism, 15 counts of murder, and 40 counts of attempted murder.
They visited the attack site the day before
The court document also states that the suspects recorded videos containing extremist messages, in which they expressed views indicating religiously motivated violent extremism.
Police allege that the father and son visited the location where the shooting later took place two days before the attack, which is considered reconnaissance and planning of a terrorist act.
According to the records, Naveed Akram refused to give a statement to police from his hospital room on the advice of his lawyer, and his next court appearance is scheduled for April.
Australian authorities announced that fifteen people were killed in the shooting at Bondi Beach on December 14, and that the attack targeted a group of Jewish families who were celebrating Hanukkah.
