"We heard 'bang, bang' – everyone fell"; Young girl killed in terrorist attack PHOTO/VIDEO
In the terrorist attack that took place yesterday at Bondi Beach, the deaths of at least 15 civilians have been confirmed, many of whom were attending the celebration of the first day of the Jewish holiday Hanukkah.
Authorities have confirmed that among the victims were two rabbis, a Holocaust survivor, and a ten-year-old girl, reports the BBC.
Matilda, 10
Authorities confirmed the death of the ten-year-old girl, identified by her family as Matilda.
Rabbi Eli Schlanger
Known as the “Rabbi of Bondi,” 41-year-old Eli Schlanger was one of the main organizers of the Sunday event and the leader of the local Chabad mission, an international Hasidic Jewish organization. Eli was the father of five children.
Dan Elkayam
The death of French national Dan Elkayam was confirmed by French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Barrot.
“With immense sadness, we have learned that our compatriot Dan Elkayam was among the victims of the terrorist attack that targeted Jewish families gathered at Bondi Beach in Sydney,” he wrote on social media, adding, “We mourn with his family and loved ones, with the Jewish community, and with the Australian people.”
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman, who came to Australia from Ukraine, was a Holocaust survivor.
“I don’t have a husband. I don’t know where his body is. No one can give me any answers,” his wife Larisa Kleytman told reporters outside a Sydney hospital on Sunday evening. She recounted that he died protecting her.
“He was standing there and suddenly we heard ‘bang, bang,’ and everyone fell. At that moment he was behind me, and at one point he decided to come closer. He pushed his body forward because he wanted to stay near me,” she told The Australian.
Peter Meagher
Former police officer Peter Meagher was working at the Hanukkah event as a freelance photographer when he was killed, confirmed his rugby club. “For him, it was simply a catastrophic case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time,” wrote Mark Harrison, general manager of Randwick Rugby Club.
Reuven Morrison
Reuven Morrison emigrated to Australia from the former Soviet Union in the 1970s as a teenager, as he revealed in an interview with ABC exactly a year ago.
“We came here with the view that Australia is the safest country in the world and the Jews would not be faced with such anti-Semitism in the future, where we can bring up our kids in a safe environment,” he said.
Rabbi Yaakov Levitan
The death of Rabbi Yaakov Levitan was confirmed by Chabad, describing him as a “well-loved coordinator” of their activities in Sydney.
