The apocalypse has arrived; "Mad Max" is on the front lines PHOTO/VIDEO
New videos have appeared on social media showing Russian tanks equipped with an unusual protective system, also known as "hedgehog" or "porcupine-style" armor.
This modification represents the latest phase in the evolution of improvised anti-drone defenses increasingly used by the Russian military on the Ukrainian front.
Unlike earlier versions, which had shorter metal spikes and simple mesh structures, the new tank models—including the T-80BVM and T-72B3M—now feature massive, elongated metal structures resembling a porcupine.
Unlike previous improvisations, the turrets can now rotate almost without restriction, while additional cameras mounted on the exterior of the vehicle compensate for the crew’s reduced visibility.
Built-in electronic warfare (EW) systems further increase a tank’s chances of surviving drone attacks.
The armored “cage” works by causing the premature detonation of munitions launched from drones before they hit the tank’s main armor.
Metal cables and grids, in some cases, even manage to physically catch or disable the rotors of FPV drones.
Tanks protected in this way can withstand multiple successive drone strikes, which drastically increases the crew’s chances of surviving an attack.
