The submarine carrying Putin's "doomsday weapon" has just been launched
Russia has launched a new strategic nuclear submarine, Khabarovsk, capable of carrying up to twelve nuclear-powered Poseidon torpedoes, the Kremlin’s latest weapons system.
The Poseidon, as explained by Russian President Vladimir Putin, is intended for conducting nuclear strikes worldwide.
Amid rising nuclear tensions, the Khabarovsk is the latest in a series of Russian projects showcasing Moscow’s nuclear capabilities.
Alongside the Poseidon torpedoes, Vladimir Putin recently unveiled the Burevestnik cruise missile, and earlier the Oreshnik missile, capable of carrying nuclear warheads and reaching any major European capital.
In response to Putin’s increasingly aggressive threats, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States might resume nuclear weapons testing, though he did not clarify whether he meant actual nuclear detonations or testing missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads.
The newly launched submarine
The newly launched submarine was specially designed and was launched this week at the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk, in the Arkhangelsk region on the White Sea.
The ceremony was not broadcast live, but was confirmed by state media and later reported by independent outlets, including the Belarusian portal NEXTA.
"Khabarovsk", according to the Russian Ministry of Defence, is the first submarine specially designed to carry the "Poseidon" system, which NATO has codenamed "Kanyon."
The vessel can reportedly carry up to twelve torpedoes; it is said to be a weapon with a nuclear reactor and, in theory, unlimited range — which Putin described as "unstoppable."
Analysts believe the torpedo can carry a multi-megaton warhead capable of generating tsunamis or contaminating vast coastal areas.
The Pentagon previously described the system as "a strategic means of delivering nuclear weapons" and "a new class of threat."
"Poseidon" was first mentioned in 2018, when Putin presented it as part of the arsenal of "invincible" Russian weapons.
At that time he also unveiled a new class of hypersonic missiles which, according to the Kremlin, can bypass any existing missile defense.
