The hurricane has intensified, leaving destruction in its path: more than 50 people have died; Next target...
The death toll from Hurricane Melissa, which struck Caribbean countries, has reached at least 50, with the extent of the damage reported as enormous, according to U.S. media this morning.
In Haiti, 30 people have died in the hurricane, while 20 are reported missing and 20 injured, the Civil Defense Agency announced.
In Jamaica, the death toll has risen to 19, while search and rescue efforts continue, said Information Minister Daina Morris-Dixon.
Two deaths have been confirmed in the Dominican Republic, and although Cuba has suffered significant damage, no casualties have been reported so far.
Melissa, one of the most powerful storms in Caribbean history, has caused devastating destruction. According to officials, the hurricane has strengthened and is now heading toward Bermuda, reports USA Today.
The hardest-hit areas include Jamaica, Cuba, and Haiti, where houses have been destroyed, power lines knocked down, and roads blocked.
In Cuba, more than 735,000 residents have been evacuated, and tourists from the northern islands have been relocated to hotels inland. Significant damage to infrastructure and crops has been reported, but no casualties have been confirmed so far.
Rescue operations are hampered by power outages, communication failures, and impassable roads.
Over 70% of electricity consumers in Jamaica are without power, and more than 130 roads are blocked.
Helicopters are being used to deliver humanitarian aid and evacuate the injured.
Bermuda is preparing for the arrival of Hurricane Melissa, with authorities closing schools and ferry services, warning residents of dangerous winds, high waves, and strong currents.
Melissa set off from the Bahamas yesterday and is heading toward Bermuda, where weather conditions are expected to "worsen" later in the day, according to the National Hurricane Center.
The National Hurricane Center has warned that conditions will deteriorate rapidly and urged residents to complete preparations before the tropical storm arrives. The international community, including the U.S., has offered financial and humanitarian aid, sending rescue teams and emergency response equipment.
U.S. President Donald Trump has instructed the State Department to mobilize support for affected communities in Jamaica, the Bahamas, Cuba, Haiti, and the Turks and Caicos Islands in the aftermath of the hurricane, the State Department announced on Thursday.
