Germany decided: We won't recognize Palestine yet
Germany has said it remains committed to supporting the creation of an independent Palestinian state, but has so far refused to recognize its statehood.
"Our goal is a Palestinian state. We support a two-state solution. There is no other way. However, this must be achieved through negotiations. At this moment, no one should lead politics with their head through the wall," said German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul ahead of his visit to New York, where he will attend the 80th meeting of the UN General Assembly.
He stated that the road to understanding, reconciliation and negotiations remains difficult and arduous.
"However, the Federal Republic of Germany stands for it. However far it may be at the moment, a negotiated two-state solution is the path that can enable Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace, security and dignity," he added.
With the UK, Canada, Australia and Portugal formally recognizing Palestine on Sunday, more countries - including France, Malta, Luxembourg - are expected to follow suit at the UN General Assembly this week.
It is expected that the leaders will also participate in the international conference on the peaceful resolution of the Palestinian issue and the implementation of the two-state solution.
