NATO scrambles fighter jets: Drone breaches airspace; Fighter jets respond swiftly MAP/PHOTO
Latvia’s National Armed Forces (NBS) said that NATO fighter jets shot down a drone that had entered Latvian airspace, while authorities suspect the aircraft was diverted due to Russian electronic warfare.
According to the NBS, the drone entered Latvian airspace as a result of Russian electronic warfare, the Delfi news portal reported. NATO fighter jets assigned to patrol the airspace of the Baltic states were scrambled and subsequently shot down the aircraft.
Latvian authorities also issued air-raid warnings this morning for the regions of Balvi, Rēzekne, Preiļi and Augšdaugava, followed later by a warning for Alūksne. The warnings were lifted at around 4:50 a.m.
The NBS said that an investigation into the incident is underway. It has not been disclosed how close the drone was to populated areas or where its wreckage fell.
