Exceptions will be designated personnel responsible for key functions, key management and specifically designated programs.

Essential personnel expected to resume work will be notified by Agency management by Thursday, February 6 at 3 p.m. local time (EST), according to the statement.

For USAID personnel currently deployed outside the US, the Agency, in coordination with missions and the Department of State, is currently preparing a plan, in accordance with all applicable requirements and laws, according to which the Agency would organize and pay for return trips to the US within 30 days and provide for the termination of contracts that are not determined to be essential.

"The Agency will consider exceptions on a case-by-case basis and extensions of return travel based on personal or family difficulties, mobility or safety concerns or other reasons. For example, the Agency will consider exceptions based on dependents' schooling time, personal or family medical needs, pregnancy and other reasons," the statement said.

It adds that guidelines will also be provided on how employees can request an exception.

USAID, which was founded in 1961, is one of the largest official aid agencies in the world and has missions in over 100 countries, primarily in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Eastern Europe.

US President Donald Trump confirmed at the beginning of February that he will abolish the US Agency for International Development (USAID), Reuters reported.

The functioning of the agency was questionable after the Trump administration announced that it was considering merging USAID with the State Department, with the aim of reducing the number of employees in the agency and aligning its spending with Trump's "America First" policy, according to the British agency.

US President Donald Trump previously said that USAID is run by a "bunch of radical lunatics" and is badly managed.

He added that he would "kick the crazies" out of the agency before a decision is made on its future.
