Help arrives to fight wildfires: EU sends four helicopters and two teams to Serbia; One Black Hawk has landed
The European Union has sent assistance to Serbia to help fight wildfires, European Commissioner for Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib said.
She wrote on X that four helicopters from the EU—from the Czech Republic, Romania and Slovakia—are being sent to Serbia, along with ground-operation teams from Germany and Romania.
The assistance teams, she said, will be deployed in Serbia through the European Civil Protection Mechanism.
“This is EU solidarity in action,” Hadja Lahbib said.
Earlier, Luka Čaušić, Assistant Minister and Head of the Emergency Situations Sector, said that Serbia had accepted assistance from the European Union, through the activated EU Civil Protection Mechanism, in fighting wildfires both in the Deliblato Sands and, if necessary, in other parts of Serbia, according to a statement from the Ministry of Interior.
“Following a proposal from the operational headquarters overseeing the firefighting operation in the Deliblato Sands, and taking into account forecasts of exceptionally high temperatures across our country in the coming period, the Republic of Serbia activated the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism, of which it is a member. Serbia subsequently accepted the EU’s offer of assistance in fighting fires both in the Deliblato Sands and, if necessary, in other parts of the country, given the extremely unfavorable hydrometeorological forecasts for the coming period,” Čaušić said.
They will be deployed in Serbia at locations designated by the Serbian authorities and will work alongside local forces to contain and extinguish the fires, Agerpres reported.
Czech Republic sends firefighting helicopters to help battle large-scale wildfires in Serbia
The Czech Fire and Rescue Service has sent helicopters to Serbia to assist in fighting large-scale wildfires, the Regional Fire and Rescue Service announced.
“Czech helicopters are heading to Serbia! We are helping to control large-scale forest fires,” the Regional Fire and Rescue Service said in a post on Instagram.
According to the statement, Serbia is facing an extreme heatwave and wildfires, with the most critical situation in the protected Deliblato Sands nature reserve, about 60 kilometers east of Belgrade.
